“Be home when the street lights come on”.

That was it. I could go play in the woods, splash in the creek, climb trees, wander on my own, and explore to my hearts content, just as long as I was home when the street lights came on. There was no texting. No snapchat or instagram. We rode our bikes around the neighborhood and discovered where the hangout house of the day was when we saw a pile of bikes in a front yard. That was our signal that we were all playing there that day. It was a different time back then, but the kids who grew up with a childhood devoid of electronic entertainment learned how to create their own adventures. We learned how to explore. We learned physics and biology and the properties of liquids all while playing in the creek. I remember I could entertain myself for hours just wading in the water, turning over rocks, and looking for crawdads and salamanders. Truth be told I can still get lost just wading in the water and seeing where the stream takes me. I still look for crawdads and salamanders too.

I remember when I was little, my sister and I used to play with our friend Rebekah and her brother Matt. We would all be out in the middle of the woods building a treehouse out of scrap lumber or making a fort of some sort. We would be completely engrossed in our play for hours. HOURS. I remember that her dad had an old police whistle he would blow to summon everyone from their playground deep in the forest. When they heard the whistle, Rebekah and Matt would drop everything and take off running through the woods in a full sprint. My sister and I struggled to keep up.

Parents today are juggling more than ever. If you are a parent of a preschooler you know just how tempting it is to buy 3 minutes of peace in the grocery store checkout line by opening a toddler friendly app on your phone. And that’s ok! There is ZERO judgement here! It can also be hard to keep the digital device use in check and not go overboard. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “A 2013 study revealed that 38% of US children younger than 2 years and 80% of 2 to 4 year-old children have used a mobile electronic media device; this has more than doubled when compared with data collected in 2011. More recent data presented in 2015 suggests that 96.9% of children have used mobile devices, and most started using them before 1 year of age. For young children, the increase in screen time, which has evolved over the past decade, has taken place in association with a decrease in play, including both active play and play with toys.”

What’s a mom to do?

Neighborhood play dates, story time at the library, and other child friendly activities are fun, but what if I told you there’s a movement sweeping the nation that offers something a bit more like your childhood….

Free Forest School.  I learned about this fascinating concept when my friend Rebekah (now a mom to a toddler herself) posted her adventures on social media. I went to one of their events to check it out, and….

It’s AWESOME!

From their website:

“Free Forest School ignites children’s innate capacity to learn through unstructured play in nature, fostering healthy development and nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers, collaborative leaders and environmental stewards.”

The Free Forest School concept encourages toddlers and preschoolers to explore, splash, play, and roam with limited adult intervention. Adults will step in to prevent a child from getting hurt but aside from that it’s child-led.  It’s also free. Who doesn’t like free? There are FFS chapters all over the country, and if you’re in Metro Atlanta you have several options. I visited the group that meets at Old Rope Mill Park in Woodstock. It started with a shared peanut-free snack for all the kids (everyone brings something small and it’s all served buffet style among toddlers and preschoolers). Then there is open play time. The kids will decide if they want to play in the creek or walk down the trails, climb trees, etc. Sometimes they even split into several smaller groups and do different things. The whole point is to introduce kids to the great outdoors, imaginative free play, and let them interact with other children at their own pace. Some kids may be outgoing adventurers while others are a bit more reserved, taking their time to observe and watch. That’s ok! After a bit of play and exploration, the kids come back together for a story or a song and after that some stay for a picnic lunch while others head home for a nap. The lack of a hard set schedule was very appealing and if my girls were still little I’d be attending weekly.

In a world of constant structure, it’s so refreshing to see kids being encouraged to create their own entertainment and enjoy true free play. No toys. No electronics. Just the great outdoors with it’s rocks and sticks and mud and bugs and all the adventure you can imagine.

11 Vital Tips for Surviving Summer Pregnancy

  • Post category:Uncategorized

My blog is normally a preview of my images along with a little story (if that). I want to start trying to do something a little different. Yes, I’ll still be sharing images, but I want to share parenting tips, advice, helpful ideas, basic photography tutorials, and more. I want to help parents take better pictures of their babies and kids. I want a place where people can offer their helpful advice as well! I’m kicking this off with 11 vital tips for surviving summer while pregnant.

I’ve had three kids. My first was born in late August, my second in early September. In the south- where pools don’t close until halloween and chocolate melts before kids can finish trick-or-treating. It’s hot. It’s humid. It’s miserable for everyone. Now add a tiny human heater growing inside you, limited lung and bladder space, and swollen ankles and you need all the help you can get!

(My third baby was born in February. She wasn’t planned, but I do think we got really lucky with the timing of that one! I loved being pregnant in winter- it was glorious!)

Without further ado- here we go.

1.) Get wet. The pool is your friend. When feet and ankles swell and joints ache, swimming can be a way to relieve pain of pregnancy, stay in shape, and stay cool! They make maternity bathing suits (Pink Blush maternity has some super cute maternity swimsuits), but you can also wear a traditional bikini if you are ready to rock it.

2.) Hydrate. Drink water. Then drink more water. Then drink some more. You don’t realize how much fluid you lose with respiration and perspiration. Being just a little dehydrated can lead to more contractions, nausea, tiredness, and generally feeling “yucky”. I know that means having to go to the bathroom even more, but your body (and your baby) will thank you.

3.) Dress for the weather. Maternity pants have come a long way since I had my babies, but many still have the big elastic panel that goes over the belly. Adding a long shirt over that and you’re now covered in multiple layers. Ditch the belly panels and opt for soft flowy dresses that allow for air circulation and have room to move.

4.) Plan your day. Either get out and run errands first thing in the morning or later in the evening. It can be hard to get out and moving when you’re heavily pregnant, but stalling in the morning can lead to sitting in traffic in the heat of the afternoon, and that’s miserable. Especially if you followed tip #2 and now have a full bladder.

5.) Eat small, light meals. Nothing makes you feel gross like a greasy burger in 90 degree weather. Plan on small meals that are light on your stomach and avoid the heartburn. Fresh fruit will help you stay full and hydrated, and adds fiber (which is even more important during pregnancy, when constipation can be bad).

6.) Stay indoors. It seems like common sense, but take advantage of the air conditioning when you can. You may be a go-getter who has to do it all yourself (especially when you’re nesting), but when its sweltering outside, it is perfectly ok to pay the neighborhood kid to pull the weeds and trim the shrubs.
lawnmower
7.) Ice Ice Baby. Eating ice chips will help you stay cool, help you stay hydrated, and let you practice for when you’re in labor. How else will you know if you prefer the chipped ice or the little round ice pellets that some convenience stores have? Add some flavored water or fresh fruit in a blender and make it an icee.
8.) Sleep it off. Find a cool place (indoors in the air conditioning, or somewhere in the shade, preferably with a cool breeze, and take a nap. A nice siesta never hurt anyone. Growing a new baby is hard work, so don’t let anyone give you a hard time about the heat wiping you out. You have to recharge your batteries and there’s no better time for a nap than during the heat of the day.
9.) Limit the sodium. Where salt goes, water follows. The more sodium you put into your body, the more water you retain. This leads to swollen ankles, swollen fingers and face, strain on the heart and lungs, overworked kidneys, fatigue, and can cause problems with your blood pressure. Remember that just because you didn’t put salt on it yourself doesn’t mean its not high in sodium! Avoid fast food, canned foods, processed snacks, and select fresh options that you season yourself. Being bloated and swollen makes the heat of summer that much worse.
pregnancy summer survival tips
10.) Address any skin concerns. Remember your sunscreen- nobody wants a sunburn and having an itchy sunburned belly is no fun. Heat can also lead to heat rashes and other conditions. Be sure to share concerns with your doctor, but don’t ignore any new rashes or outbreaks that happen. Be sure to discuss with your doctor. (There is a condition calls PUPPS that can occur during pregnancy and causes an itchy rash. Any skin conditions that aren’t normal for you need the evaluation of a medical professional).
maternity and pregnancy advice
11.)  Get creative. You may need to set up fans, take multiple showers, or use cool damp rags on your neck. It’s perfectly ok! The most important thing to remember is to take care of yourself first. If that means resorting to some obscure solutions then who cares, as long as it works!
If you have tips for surviving the summer heat while pregnant, please share in the comments!

When you’re expecting a new baby, it seems like 9 months takes forever. When you finally get to hold your new baby in your arms, it seems like the newborn stage goes by in the blink of an eye. Your baby grows so fast that before you know it, you look at them and realize they’re filling out and outgrowing the newborn clothes (and newborn diapers). How will you document this stage of their lives?

Professional newborn photography ensures that the details never fade. You will have those memories for years to come, and you can show your baby just how tiny they were once they’re a little older. I know it’s difficult to think about now, but just imagine giving your daughter her own newborn photo album on her wedding day!

First Birthday Cake Smash on White | Canton GA | Shot From the Heart Photography

Mom requested a simple cake smash on a white background. Something light, bright, elegant, classy… I would say we nailed it! Monroe is the birthday girl and she had a fantastic time smashing her cake. She’s such a happy baby, and has the most beautiful blue eyes. I think I need to offer a white background more. I love the simplicity. Sometimes less is more.

2 months old | Atlanta Newborn Photography

Most newborn photographers, myself included, stress the importance of documenting newborns within the first 2 weeks or so after birth. Babies change and fill out very very quickly. By definition, they are only newborns for a month. But I wanted to challenge myself to see what I could do with an older baby, but one not yet old enough to sit up on their own. Little miss Dela June is 9 weeks old and was a wonderful way for me to see what I could do artistically with a baby of this age. Isn’t she an absolute doll? Here are a few from her session- enjoy!
*If you are considering newborn photos, it IS important to find a photographer you click with and schedule your session well before baby’s arrival. This post isn’t illustrating the this is a substitute for the true newborn stage, rather it was a way for me to push myself and try something different from what I normally do.

You are my sunshine | Cake Smash Session | Canton, GA baby photographer

Birthdays are for celebrating! Turning 1 is a pretty big milestone, and a professional portrait session is a great way to ensure that those memories are preserved for years to come.

This little guy came for a session for his first birthday session and cake smash, and I would say he had a blast.

Happy birthday Layden.

His cake smash theme was “you are my sunshine”, and I always include 2-3 setups of 12 month portraits before the cake, so when mom suggested this sunny theme I knew just the background to use. He’s so cheerful that we kept it simple and let him be the star of the set.

Then it was time for the cake!
Baby Layden does have some food sensitivities, so mom had his cake specially made and I think it turned out beautifully.

He wasn’t so sure at first. This can be normal when we put a cake in front of a baby, sitting on the ground, in an unfamiliar surrounding. My general rule is that as long as baby isn’t upset/crying, we let them go at their own pace and just enjoy watching!

It didn’t take him long to investigate his cake.

And it tasted pretty yummy too.

It wasn’t long before he was smashing into his cake, and checking to make sure nobody was taking it away from him, lol!

Mmmmmmmm

Good to eat, fun to squish.

I love getting detail shots during cake smashes.

What a happy baby!

Babies will let you know when they are done. When they do, it’s time for a bath.
That is included with my cake smash sessions too!

Splish splash- time to get clean with bubbles and a rubber ducky.

If your little one is approaching their first birthday, scheduling a birthday and cake smash session is a great way to ensure you have those memories to look back on for years to come.
